When in Syracuse, New York, Be Sure to Eat at Pastabilities for a Great Meal!

By Jodee Weiland

When I think about this particular trip, I can’t help but think about the wonderful Pastabilities! Oh, what a great place to stop and have a delicious meal!

Recently, we drove from Chicago to Cape Cod with a few stops in between here and there.  We were on our way to an area just outside of Boston for a family wedding.  We decided to extend our trip another week, so we could spend time on Cape Cod.  On the way to and from the Cape, one of the cities we stopped at was Syracuse, New York, and this was no accident.

https://learnfromyesterday.com

We had seen a restaurant called Pastabilities featured on the TV show, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, with Guy Fieri.  They talked about the Pastabilities Daily Spicy Hot Tomato Oil that the restaurant served to customers with fresh baked bread, while waiting for their meal.  It was a bread dipping sauce in place of the typical olive oil.  It looked delicious, and that’s all it took for me to put Syracuse, New York, on the route we would take to the Cape!

https://learnfromyesterday.com

This was one of the best choices I have ever made in planning our road trip routes.  Pastabilities is without a doubt a wonderful restaurant that serves a choice of pastas and more, including homemade pastas.  The Pastabilities Daily Spicy Hot Tomato Oil is not only used as a dipping oil for bread, it is also used as a sauce for pasta.  I had it with homemade linguini, and I have to say it was beyond delicious.  It was superb or as my husband would say, “Best of the best!”  We both loved it and wish we could go there more often to enjoy this and all the other wonderful selections on the menu.

The owner, Karyn Korteling, not only has her restaurant, Pastabilities, but also owns a shop across the street called Pasta’s Daily Bread, where they bake delicious fresh bread and sell the Pastabilities Daily Spicy Hot Tomato Oil as well.  You can, also, purchase it at the restaurant and online.  Needless to say, we left with a full supply of this wonderful sauce to bring home and enjoy!  I guarantee we will be buying more online until we can go back again.  If you can’t get to Syracuse, but would like to try some, just go online and order it.  Trust me when I say, if you order this Pastabilities Daily Spicy Hot Tomato Oil online, you won’t be disappointed!

While dining at this fabulous restaurant, Pastabilities, Karyn came and greeted us at our table and told us she would be opening a place behind her restaurant where they would now be making even more homemade pastas, and perhaps having workshops for those interested in learning how they do this.  I would love to be able to attend one of her workshops once they get it going, because everything she makes is above and beyond delicious!

According to her website for Pastabilities, Karyn claims her success is due to the fact that everything is homemade from pastas to desserts.  The breads served with her Pastabilities Daily Spicy Hot Tomato Oil are all baked fresh throughout the day at her own shop. This is all true, and I am glad I had a chance to experience it firsthand.   Pastabilities is one of the best restaurants I have had the pleasure to have had a meal.  But don’t take my word for it, since Guy Fieri of HGTV did a whole show on this restaurant and said the same thing!  If you ever have the chance to visit Syracuse, New York, this downtown restaurant is a stop you should put at the top of your list.  So when in Syracuse, New York, be sure to eat at Pastabilities for a great meal! You won’t regret it!  Enjoy!

Thank you to owner, Karyn Korteling, for all her help, for allowing me to take pictures of her restaurant for this post, and for taking the time to talk to me about Pastabilities.  Thank you so much, Karyn!

Italian Bread…Nothing Better than Fresh Baked Bread

By Jodee Weiland

Being Italian, I know how important good Italian bread is to complete an Italian meal.

https://learnfromyesterday.com

When I was growing up, my parents always had Italian bread in the house.  It complemented many different meals in our home from pasta dishes to soups to Italian beef and more.  It was even sometimes used as a teething ring for the babies in the family.

https://learnfromyesterday.comThat’s true!  It seemed that every baby in our family was handed a fresh loaf of Italian bread to gum to death when teething.  Of course, they were watched closely as the traditional family picture of the baby was taken holding a loaf of Italian bread to their mouths and attempting to chew on it.  The babies were all naturals at this process, and mom and dad were always overjoyed to see them do this.  Today, those are fond memories held by all the children and grandchildren.

That’s why making Italian bread is so much more than just making the bread for me.  It’s memories of family that go along with this process of baking the bread that make it special for me.  So enjoy this recipe and hopefully, you will have some memories of your own that making this bread will bring back to you as well in one way or another.

Italian Bread…Nothing Better than Fresh Baked Bread

3 and 1/2 cups bread flour (the last 1/4 cup or less to be added as needed)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1 tablespoon active dry yeast
1 and 3/4 cups warm water (1/2 cup of this will be for the yeast mixture)
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 gently beaten egg white

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.  Prepare parchment paper for baking sheet.

https://learnfromyesterday.com

In a small mixing bowl, mix 1 tablespoon of active dry yeast and a pinch of sugar with 1/2 cup of warm water, that is water that is warm to the touch, about 100 degrees. Stir this and let it rest for about 10 minutes until it becomes foamy.

https://learnfromyesterday.com

Then in a large mixing bowl, gradually blend together the flour, salt, sugar, yeast and water mixture, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, and remaining water as you begin to work this with your hands into dough. At first, you may blend the ingredients with a spoon, but as it thickens you will work it with your hands. Once your dough is all blended, continue to work the dough with your hands and begin to knead the dough for about 8 minutes. Do this on a flat surface, where you will add flour as you go to the surface to keep your dough from sticking.

https://learnfromyesterday.com

Once done, place your ball of dough into a bowl, smoothing a touch of olive oil over the dough.  Cover the bowl loosely with plastic wrap or a clean towel for about 20 to 30 minutes and let it rest.  It should double in size.

https://learnfromyesterday.com

Remove the dough from the bowl and knead it again before shaping into a loaf.  Place your loaf on a parchment covered baking sheet and cover loosely with a towel while it sits.  Once again, it should double in size.  When it does so, take the gently beaten egg white and brush it on the loaf.  You may not use all of it.  Then with a sharp knife cut 3 to 4 (1/4 inch deep) slits diagonally across the top of the loaf.  Put the bread into the preheated oven and bake at 375 degrees for 25 to 35 minutes.  My loaf took about 34 minutes to bake.  Allow bread to cool briefly before cutting and serving.

https://learnfromyesterday.comThere’s nothing quite like fresh baked Italian Bread.  No matter what meal you serve it with, your family will enjoy it.  This bread recipe is a basic Italian bread recipe, but you could add whatever you like to it.  This basic recipe can be the base for a cheese bread or olive bread or any type Italian Bread you want.  Next time I make it, I am going to make it with a cheese and some jalapenos.  Try it out and see how many different ways you can vary it.  I think you will like it, even if you just choose to make just the basic recipe.  So try it, and enjoy!

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina…Beautiful Oceanfront Sunrises and Seashells

By Jodee Weiland

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is a beautiful place to visit and watch the sunrise each day.  Once the sun rises, the day is filled with beautiful views of the oceanfront from morning to night.

https://learnfromyesterday.com

Day or night though, I don’t know what it is about the oceanfront, but it calms me to listen to waves as they roll into the shoreline.  The steady beat of nature’s voice as the waves hit the shore inevitably lulls me into a state of inner peacefulness as I watch the waves continuously hit the shore over and over again.  Who needs more of a reason than this to want to visit Myrtle Beach? Not me!

https://learnfromyesterday.com

But there is more to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, than this.  For one thing the access to fresh seafood is wonderful.  All up and down the oceanfront and nearby, visitors can find a multitude of restaurants offering everything from seafood entrees to seafood buffets.  I’m not really a fan of buffets, but I do love a good restaurant that serves fresh seafood entrees done well.  The choices are unlimited from Pawleys Island to Murrells Inlet to the oceanfront Myrtle Beach boardwalk and beyond, the Grand Strand as they call it.  Just look through all the readily available visitor guides and start choosing what appeals to you.

https://learnfromyesterday.com

One of our favorites in Myrtle Beach was the 2nd Avenue Pier House Restaurant.  We had the best crab cakes here as an appetizer.  Our server told us they used no fillers in their house made crab cakes, just fresh crabmeat served pan seared with remoulade.  They were fabulous.  They also had crab cakes as a main course or a sandwich on the menu, so it was up to you just how you would have them.  For our main course, we enjoyed their blackened grouper with creole crayfish cream and their broiled scallops in lemon butter topped with seasoned breadcrumbs and parsley.  These were just a few of the wonderful dishes we had there.  After dinner, you could go out on the pier and view the ocean up close.  It really was an enjoyable way to end your meal.

https://learnfromyesterday.com

Of course beyond the seafood, you have the obvious, sitting on the beach and relaxing as well as shelling, swimming, dolphin cruises, and all the other oceanfront activities one would expect.  For those interested, there are entertainment venues like “The Carolina Opry” and more. Then there is also plenty of shopping venues and various family oriented attractions, but there is one attraction easily recognized by any Myrtle Beach visitor.  That attraction is on the Myrtle Beach boardwalk and can be seen from long distances up and down the oceanfront, especially at night.  It’s the 200 foot high SkyWheel, lighting up the sky at night and has tourists lining up for the ride with a view.  It definitely makes a statement because it is not just any ferris wheel ride.  If you visit, you will find out why.

https://learnfromyesterday.com

But for me, it’s all about relaxing, enjoying the oceanfront, eating wonderful seafood, and well…enjoying life!  So if you ever travel out to South Carolina and you get the chance to visit Myrtle Beach, take the time to explore a little and find out all the wonderful things you can do and see while there.  There is so much more than I can describe in this short post.  But it’s a great place to visit and if you’re like me, just listening to the sounds of ocean and watching the waves roll in will be enough of a reason to visit.  So if you do visit for whatever reason, enjoy!
