Awesome Green Smoothie with Spinach, Asparagus, and Fruit

By Jodee Weiland

Having a lot of extra baby spinach, asparagus, and fruit in the house is always great, unless you’re about to go away for an extended weekend trip for several days! That’s when I start making more green smoothies for my husband and me, and in this case, An Awesome Green Smoothie with Spinach, Asparagus, and Fruit.

I knew that I would be gone for the weekend, so there was no problem anticipated with being gone for that short time. It was when I decided to extend that weekend to visit with family that I decided I needed to use up the fresh fruit and vegetables I had just purchased. Of course, I cleaned and froze some of them whole and used others in recipes that I froze for later, but I still had some that needed to be used before leaving. Rather than let any of them go to waste, I chose to make us some very healthy green smoothies.

    • It is and isn’t! Many smoothies created for health have any healthy vegetable you can imagine mixed with fruit. Which ones you choose to use in your smoothie determines the nutrients you will get from it. This one is really delicious despite what you might expect from the ingredients. Thanks for stopping by to visit!

    • Thanks, Rick! I like to try new things, and smoothies are a great way to do that! This really tastes great. Thanks for stopping by to visit!

    • Thanks, Shelley! This smoothie is definitely both healthy and delicious. I love trying new things with smoothies, so I decided asparagus is healthy…why not add it? Thanks for stopping by to chat!

  1. Now that’s a very creative smoothie! I’ve never seen asparagus in a smoothie before. I can see how the apple and cantaloupe really take a very green vegetable tasting smoothie and turn it into a sweet and tasty treat..

    • It’s definitely uses a lot of green vegetables, but it tastes wonderful and with the fruits, it is sweet as well. When I create a smoothie, if it’s healthy, and it isn’t nailed down, it’s going into the smoothie. I’ve been pretty lucky so far, because they’ve all tasted great! Thanks for stopping by to visit. I always enjoy chatting with you!

    • You won’t be disappointed! We add spinach, so why not asparagus? I love vegetables, so with me anything goes! Thanks for stopping by to visit!

  2. I do not have a blender (nor do I want one), so I mix frozen spinach puree with Rauch Happy Day 100% Multivitamin mild with Calcium (ingredients below):
    Ingredients / tech. Information –
Fruit juices, fruit juice concentrates (Apple, Orange, pear, grape, pineapple, passion fruit, lemon), puree concentrates (banana, Apple, mango, apricot), purées (peach, guava), vitamins (B1, B2, B6, C, E, biotin, CA PANTOTHENATE, niacin), provitamin-A
Other than the probable lack of fiber, is there anything nutritionally wrong with this? It is also sooo much easier – just shake and drink!

    • Hi Carol, I’m not a nutritionist, but just someone who tries to eat and live healthy. For me, one of the keys to doing this is checking labels and trying to eat natural foods as much as possible. This is a personal preference. I do recommend reading Michael Pollan’s book, In Defense of Food, if you want some great information on this topic. There’s so much more to the topic of healthy eating, and this book is a great place to start. It was recommended to me by a friend who is a cardiac surgeon.

For you, not having a blender would make it difficult to create a smoothie such as this, since a smoothie is just taking foods that are healthy and blending them into one easy drink. You can get those same nutrients by eating the these foods, each on their own, if you prefer to do so. A smoothie, by definition, is “a creamy beverage made of fruit blended with juice, milk, or yogurt.” For me, I prefer to get my nutrients through foods in their natural state and unprocessed. Also, fiber is much higher in fresh vegetables and fruit. Overall, I personally think food tastes better this way and is healthier, but again that’s a personal choice. I feel only you can decide what’s best for you.

  4. I don’t understand how the recipe makes one serving. It makes an entire blender full, which equates to about six juice glasses as the recipe depicts. It is very good though. My wife and I now drink one every morning.

    • Thank you, Steven! It definitely is a great tasting smoothie! As to the serving size, the glass in the picture is larger than you may think, but in juice glasses, it could easily be more servings. Thanks again for stopping by and taking time to chat with me!

    • Yes and no…either way works, especially if you have left over asparagus from dinner the day before, but it is really a matter of preference and taste. Thanks for stopping by to chat with me!
